When was the last time you picked up the Yellow Pages to look for contact information on a business? It has probably been a while. Local marketing used to be dominated by the Yellow Pages, radio and newspapers, but it’s not what’s happening today. Today’s consumer needs everything instantly. They look on the web for updated business information and recommendations before choosing to go out and make a purchase. At the present time 97% of all consumers use the internet when searching for products or services in their local area. That’s a pretty big chunk!
This is why it is so important to have your business registered on as many local directory sites as possible. The best thing is that most of these websites are totally free! Hopefully after reading this article, you will run to a computer and register your business online. One great thing about these sites is that your customers can leave live testimonials under your profile for the world to see. How great would it be if someone is looking to purchase a product and sees 10 amazing reviews about your business? Also many allow you to place deals and coupons for your business.
I know it can get overwhelming and you may not be sure where to start, so I have done some of the homework for you. I put a website link at the bottom of this article to a list of 50 different directories. The top directories at the moment are Google Places, Yahoo Local, Yelp and Bing Maps, but there are dozens more. Google controls 65% of online searches therefore, this should be the first place to start. One great thing about Google is that when someone searches for a product online it automatically shows businesses around their local area. These local businesses are placed at the top of the search results. If you searched on Google right now for “printing, 07070”, Pix-l Graphx will be the top listing right under the paid advertisements. And that my friends didn’t cost a dime!
To get you started with Google all you have to do is:
1. Go to www.google.com
2. Click on “Maps” on the top menu
3. On the left click on “Put your business on Google Maps”
4. Sign in to Google if you have an account or create one.
5. Follow the instructions. Try to be as detailed as possible. The more information on your business profile the higher the chances that your business will show up on the top of the local searches, which will always translate to new customers.
So what are you waiting for? Sign up and get your business on the map!
